Speaking with a few cancer survivors today brought to light the actual cost of cancer treatment. A cancer survivor disclosed to me that her chemotherapy cost in the neighbourhood of HK$100,000 and she was treated in a public hospital. A former student revealed to me that his father's chemo treatment cost over HK$10,000 per cycle. It is not unheard of that people sell their homes to pay for their cancer treatment. And the available government funding is so complex that it deters most from applying. Well, government funding is only available to those below a certain income level so those above it, who don't necessarily have the available funds or any savings, would not be eligible. Another cancer survivor is bitter that expected insurance compensation never came through because the insurance company escaped from paying because of a technicality. How do they cope? How do their families cope?
