Research Background
Mending the Broken Heart the doctoral research (2012-2016) was divided into two parts. The first part explored and described the Hong Kong Chinese cancer caregiver experience through the use of traditional data collection methods such as interviews and focus groups, as well as through drama workshops. The second part was to use the data collected to create a drama performance. This drama production served as a platform for open exchange and discussion between research participants and stakeholders such as cancer patients, cancer survivors, caregivers (family and friends), doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, and cancer organization workers. Other interested parties such as applied theatre practitioners, were also invited. The objective was to use drama to provide enlightenment, empowerment and emancipation for the cancer caregivers by using the drama production as an educational tool for people who face challenges in cancer caregiving.
